What the Hell kind of Support Site is this?
Heh, the kind of site you have when I use all my time to write the app and then I still have a millionteen things to get in place to get it to you.
ok, excuses aside, basically CAD Replace works like you would expect any find - replace thingy in any app. Well, that was my intention, please let me know if it doesn't.
If you have selected things in the drawing it will only search in those objects, if nothing is selected then it will search everything it can. The same goes for the list in the palette of the things it found, if you select any you will see some buttons at the bottom of the list - they only act on the things you have selected. You can select multiple things with the usual Shift and Control Key plus clicks.
HOW DO I START THIS THING?
Oh yeah, that's important, I'm glad you asked. There's no magic button yet so you need to type in the command..CADreplace..that will open the tool palette. Your cursor should already be in the find field so you an just type your text and hit enter to find it. Tick the boxes in the Search Settings to choose what kind of objects to search in.
If you tap the ALT key you will see a letter in each command is underlined - these are the alt-key shortcuts for each command or button. e.g. Alt-A is Replace All.
Replacing Attribute Tags in blocks is kinda tricky so make sure you save your work before the first time you attempt it. Still...(see next question). Hot tip: if you're editing a block in-place and you copy-paste some Attributes and want to change their tags, effectively adding new attributes to the block, make sure you untick the Sync Block Definition Attribs - yeah, everything turns scary-red but it's ok, this time. If you actually want to change Tags, make sure the right boxes are ticked (don't forget Inside Block Definitions) and all the scary-red goes away.
If you know what Regular Expressions are then you're in luck, tick the box. If you are relatively normally socially adjusted then you've probably never heard of them - untick that box, there be dragons in there. If you're curious (I tried to warn you) then keep an eye on the Messages and Warnings area when you use wildcards - you will see the Regular Expression translations there. You will see them in the logs too. What logs? Have a look in the About tab.
The wildcard options are individually selectable and work the same way as the do in AutoCAD, which is to say they confuse me more than Regular Expressions but not as much as Autodesk's website.
Some of the settings are greyed-out, you can't change them. That's because I haven't finished them yet - if you really want it, bug me about it. You never know, that might work, don't let my kids' testimony deter you from trying that.
Does Control-Z work?
Hell Yeah. Thank $Deity, I use it all the time. All. The. Time.
Does it work on AutoCAD LT
No, nothing works on AutoCAD LT - LT cannot run plugins. If you want to use it in AutoCAD, probably the easiest way to do that is to get a trial version or a 1-month subscription.
Does it run on BricsCAD, or any other CAD?
Not yet but a version for BricsCAD is coming soon. If you have a different CAD and you want CAD replace for your CAD, please let me know
Will the trial limitations break a replacement of Attribute Tags inside blocks?
Probably. If you have more replacements than the trial will do then the ones that get missed will break comprehensively when you ATTSYNC that block definition. I haven't actually tested that yet but I suspect it will break them - badly. Everything else should be 100% reliable in the trial. Tell me if it's not, there's a contact link on this the page.
Speaking ... ok, writing ... of trial limitations, the Messages and Warnings area will always tell you how many things it really found, even if the trial chaos-monkey steals most of them away from you. The Trial will only do a few replacements at a time. Want them all ? - Buy CAD Replace!
How do Batch Replacements Work?
Really well, actually. Probably not so well in the trial given the limitation on the number of things it will replace but it's definitely worth trying out. Batch replacements are a topic unto themselves, I'll get around to that asap. Message me if you have questions about it. An undocumented (oh, wait) feature - if you right-click the find button (on the first tab) it adds the current search to the batch list in the Batch tab. Save the batch as a CSV, JSON is a bit tricky to edit. It seemed like a good idea at the time but it wasn't. You can edit the CSV in Excel. There's a CSV Instructions button on the batch tab that tells you how to format the CSV lines.
Take my Money! Wait, how?
How do I uninstall it?
Well, I can't think why you would want to do that but I will entertain the theory - you can uninstall it from the usual Add-Remove Programs window where all your other applications can be uninstalled from, just look for CAD Replace in that list.
You missed something, how can I ask you a question?
Did I? </sarcasm> The contact links on this page will get your message straight to me, I don't have an army of elves copy-pasting prefabricated excuses and platitudes, there's me, me and only me answering all your messages so please, fire away. All of your feedback, suggestions, confusions, good, bad or otherwise are wholesomely encouraged and will probably end up as answers on this page - please fire away!
